Drug giant Novartis has agreed to pay $422.5 million in criminal and civil penalties for promoting illegal "off-label" use of its epilepsy drug Trileptal and five other Novartis drugs - joining the growing list of drug companies who have paid criminal fines for paying kickbacks to physicians. These kickbacks include paying them to be Big Pharma speakers bureau or advisory board members, or providing free entertainment, travel and meals - all deliberately implemented to get other docs to prescribe more of these six Novartis drugs.
